A Day At The Beach

Here I am lying in the sparkling scorching sun,

protected by the shade of my colorful umbrella

I hear the continuous sound of the waves,

crashing against the shore, like a soothing song on a radio.

I can see little children playing in the sand,

building sand castles, like the houses that I see on my street.

I can hear children chattering and laughing with excitement,

at the water's edge.

In the distance, bathers are splashing, surfing, swimming,

and enjoying their day at the beach.

POLLUTION

By: Aparna  V. age11

Fifty-six million humans die each year because of pollution. I have come here today to tell you all that we should stop polluting. It not only affects us, it also decreases our natural resources, all animal life and many other organisms.

Do you want to continue living here on Earth instead of increasing your risks of dying from pollution? Humans pollute by littering, burning too much fossil fuels, and by not using our natural resources wisely. Time and our future here on Earth are wasting away. As I speak, more and more pollution is affecting the Earth and its inhabitants. We need to become active citizens now!

Pollution affects many things. It affects the water, our food and the air we breathe. Every year, rivers carry tons of toxic materials such as oil, lead, phosphorous, nitrates, chromium, cadmium, as well as many others. Water pollution affects the water we drink and the animals that live in it. Soon, we will not have any clean water to drink! Air pollution is another type of pollution that affects the Earth and its inhabitants. Smoke from factories cause air pollution and the air pollution. Air pollution also causes global warming. Cars, planes, the burning and chopping down of our trees and burning fossil fuel all have an effect on our environment. This causes us to have that odd cough, burning eyes and diseases such as asthma. If we care about the Earth then we cannot let this happen.  If we stop polluting, we can decrease the chances of asthma and other health conditions. Our natural resources will last longer. The amount of humans that die will also decrease. Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin believes we should stop polluting the Earth. He believes we must take care of the Earth and protect it. He does not want to see the Earth or its inhabitants destroyed. This is why he created "Earth Day".

See full size imageSome of my friends have asthma. Pollution causes asthma to become more severe and often times more deadly. That is why those affected by asthma often avoid going near smoke, or outside on a humid day and they try to be as far from fires when they go camping. A friend of mine once lit some fireworks. She said the smoke made her eyes burn and caused her to cough. Fireworks are one of the causes of pollution. Pollution is affecting us every day we need to stop it!

See full size imageSome of you might think that pollution is not a serious matter but it is. Pollution decreases our natural resources. The amount of trees are decreasing because of human activities such as the burning and chopping of our vegetation and trees, smoke from factories and the burning of fossil fuels. We need trees and plants in order to survive. Every single day, every single minute of the day our amount of oxygen is decreasing! I know that we chop trees in order to make products but we should do that less often or find other alternatives. We must use our natural resources wisely if we expect to make a real difference in our society and environment!

Shakespeare once wrote, “The tyranny of the open night’s too rough for nature to endure.”  We are killing the Earth and its inhabitant's right along with it! In closing, we must implement changes in the way we live day to day. We must stop polluting. Some of the things we could do make a significant difference are:

  • Stop littering.
  • Stop burning to much fossil fuels.
  • Clean up our lakes, streams and waterways.
  • We can use our natural resources more wisely.
  • Plant more trees.

By doing this, our natural resources will increase and so will life on Earth. The Earth will be a cleaner and healthier place. Therefore, I will ask you again, “Do you want to continue living on Earth instead of increasing the risks of us dying by pollution?” WE MUST STOP POLLUTION!!WE MUST MAKE A CHANGE!
